Every student needs strong literacy skills to succeed in school and in life. Being able to read, write, speak, and listen well, is key to being able to communicate well. But why is it important to be math literate? Mathematical literacy, also known as numeracy, means having the ability to problem-solve, reason, and analyze information/data. It is the ability to use numbers to help solve real-world problems. By developing math literacy, students are able to understand the language of mathematics. Knowing and understanding the language of mathematics is important because math is everywhere. Math is a tool we use to understand the world we live in. As a mathematics educator, I have put together this website of instructional strategies that can be used in the classroom to promote mathematical literacy.
