Fostering academic discourse within your classroom is important for students' academic development. Academic discourse allows students to develop important communication skills using a specific type of academic language. It can involve student-to-student, small group, or whole class discussion. Essentially, students learn how to use the academic language of a specific content area verbally. In math this is especially important because math is a different language in and of itself. Knowing how to use mathematical language within the context of a discussion is key for students to be able to explain, justify, and understand their reasoning.
